The Department of State Services (DSS) has officially launched a parallel investigation into the breach, just hours after Nollywood star-turned-politician Emeka Ike publicly threatened a massive lawsuit against Lere Olayinka, a media aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The crisis, which began unfolding in late May, reached a boiling point following the arrest and detention of an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ICT official. The scandal erupted on May 30, 2026, when Lere Olayinka published screenshots on social media containing sensitive, restricted Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) data belonging to Emeka Ike.
In a swift institutional response, INEC confirmed that its internal surveillance tracked the leak directly to an authorized backend user credential assigned to a field officer. The commission immediately detained the implicated officer and handed them over to the police. ”We take the privacy of voters’ data with utmost sanctity,” an INEC spokesperson stated. “Any breach of our backend systems by internal or external actors will be met with the full wrath of the law.”
Recognizing the potential vulnerabilities a backend compromise poses to Nigeria’s democratic infrastructure, the DSS has stepped in to spearhead a parallel security investigation.
