Wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has advised adolescents in the country to avoid the temptation of drug consumption in order not to destroy their future.

Soludo stated this in a message to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday in Awka.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is marked annually on June 26 to raise awareness on the major societal problems caused by illicit drugs and to strengthen global action toward a society free of drug abuse

The theme for the 2026 celebration of the day is -“World drug problem: persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses”.

She called on parents, teachers, community leaders and other stakeholders to renew their commitment to protecting children and youths from the dangers of substance abuse through sustained awareness, prevention and support.

According to her, drug abuse  has continued to rob many young people of their aspirations and opportunities, with far-reaching consequences for families and society.

“Drug abuse steals dreams, destroys potential and future, and weakens the fabric of our homes and communities,” Dr Soludo said.

The governor’s wife stressed that collective action remained essential in addressing the menace and safeguarding the future of the younger generation.

She expressed confidence that with the cooperation of government, families, schools, religious organisations and communities, Nigeria could build a healthier, safer and drug-free society.

“With all hands fully on deck, we can build a healthier, safer and drug-free society where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

“Say no to drug abuse,” she said.
