In a major diplomatic victory for Nigeria, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has been appointed Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).
The appointment was formally announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, following executive deliberations held during the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
The high-level sessions convened leaders and representatives from 56 member states, alongside King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth. As the primary custodian of the Commonwealth’s political principles, CMAG is tasked with assessing serious and persistent violations of democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law across member nations.
Under the group’s newly constituted leadership, Malta’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chris Fearne, will serve as Chair alongside Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
Speaking on the development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe emphasized the strategic weight of the election. “Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s appointment places Nigeria in a strategic position to directly shape discussions, foster institutional accountability, and safeguard fundamental human rights and rule-of-law standards across member states,” Abu-Obe stated during a briefing in Abuja.
Accepting the mandate on behalf of the nation, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to advancing constitutional governance and strengthening democratic institutions both regionally and across the wider Commonwealth.
