The nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) kicked off with a remarkable digital surge, as a staggering 69,376 Nigerians successfully pre-registered to vote online within the first seven hours of the portal going live on Monday, August 18, 2025, reports ITREALMS .
This impressive figure highlights a growing embrace of technology in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) available to ITREALMS , showed a near-equal gender split among the early registrants, with 33,803 (48.7%) males and 35,573 (51.3%) females.
The most dominant demographic was young Nigerians, with 48,033 (69.2%) of the pre-registrants aged 18-34, highlighting a strong interest in political participation among the youth.
The online portal, available 24/7, allows citizens to pre-register and will be supplemented by in-person registration beginning on Monday, August 25. The physical registration will take place at 811 INEC offices nationwide.
The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the press statement emphasized that the two registration options will run simultaneously to ensure every eligible citizen has the opportunity to participate.
He also reminded the public that voting registration is only for Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and are not already registered.
He warned against double or multiple registrations, which he noted are a violation of the law.
The statement also confirmed that INEC would provide weekly updates on the CVR exercise, including a detailed breakdown by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability.
This commitment to transparency is a key part of the ongoing effort to ensure the integrity of the voter registration process.
