In a landmark shift toward 21st-century healthcare delivery, Abia State has officially begun migrating from an analogue system to a fully digitalized medical ecosystem. The transition was highlighted ahead of the official commissioning on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, marking the state’s 35th anniversary of creation.
​Located at the local government headquarters in Mgboko, the newly retrofitted Obingwa General Hospital serves as the premier benchmark for secondary healthcare facilities under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
The state-of-the-art facility features modern digital beds, automated laboratories, solar-powered electricity, and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled diagnostic tools capable of checking vital signs and streamlining clinical procedures seamlessly.
​During a comprehensive pre-commissioning inspection on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM, the Abia State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, emphasized that the technological upgrade aligns with the governor’s vision to democratize access to world-class healthcare for rural and suburban populations.
​”In fact, one of the equipment that we have here is AI-enabled so that we can leverage technology to expand coverage,” Prof. Uche stated. “We have a digital stadiometer that measures height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse simultaneously to calculate BMI at a glance.
The system is directly linked to our cloud-based digital archive, automatically transferring and securing patient records while analyzing key medical parameters. His Excellency is not just building a future-ready healthcare system, but customising it to be people-friendly and contextually appropriate.”
​The facility, which was previously dilapidated and dysfunctional, underwent complete remodelling rather than outright demolition. It now houses advanced radiology units, modern surgical theatres, automated blood chemistry analyzers, and cloud-linked Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
​Also speaking during the facility tour, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospitals Management Board (HMB), Dr. Odochi Azubuike, noted that the secondary healthcare system acts as a vital bridge between primary health centers and tertiary institutions like the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH).
She confirmed that medical personnel have been deployed to operate the modern diagnostic units, ensuring seamless referrals, continuous patient care, and high-quality clinical operations.
