The women’s wing of Ubulu-Uku Development Union (a.k.a. Osodieli) Lagos Branch, led by Dr. (Mrs) Veronica Chigbufue on Saturday honoured the Editor-in-Chief of Atlanticnewsonline, Mr. Frank Oshanugor with an award. Several others were also honoured for their outstanding contributions to their community and Nigeria in general.
Oshanugor was honoured in recognition of his performance in journalism as an “Outstanding Journalist and Author of the year” while others were recognized for their contributions to humanity in various capacities.
Others honoured at the “Ubulu-Uku Women’s Day Celebration” tagged Osodieli ’26” which held at St. Jude Catholic Church Mafoloku Lagos event center included a medical doctor, Dr. Phil Nonye Ofulue, Chairman of Picaddilly Hotels, Lekki, Mr. Sam Ifeozo, Mrs. Justina Usifo, Mrs.Christy Nkem Obianwuna, Lagos businessman Chief Fruitful Mekwunye and some others.
Chairman of the occasion and former President General of the Ubulu-Uku Development Union (UDU), Chief Fruitful Mekwunye in his speech gave the historical background of the Osodieli women and how the group has over the years contributed immensely towards building families.
Mekwunye commended the Ubulu-Uku women for largely supporting their spouses to create and build solid families. According to him, when women are strong in building families, they give birth to stronger communities and societies.”
Current President-General of UDU in Lagos, Engr. Emmanuel Enuani while commending the womenfolk in organizing the event, used the opportunity to appeal to all Ubulu-Uku traditional chiefs to collectively seek peace in the town as there is perceived disunity among some indigenes.
Speaking in a similar vein, the immediate past President-General of the town union, Engr. Emmanuel Idegwu commended the Osodieli women for constantly promoting Ubulu-Uku traditionally weaved fabric known as Akwa Ocha in their outings. He enjoined them to always promote the Ubulu-Uku culture wherever they are, as doing otherwise would lead to cultural overkill and eventual extinction of their indigenous culture.
Idegwu also harped on the need for every citizen and other Nigerians to be conscious always of their security. He advised that the current state of insecurity in Nigeria should be of utmost concern to every citizen.
The well-attended colourful ceremony was one occasion in contemporary times where Ubulu-Uku sons and daughters resident in Lagos came together in great numbers to celebrate with one another.
Apart from the presentation of awards to deserving citizens, another highlight of the occasion was the unveiling of the well packaged and colourful event brochure. This attracted handsome donations from guests and it was reliably gathered that part of the proceeds would be used to cater for some less privileged children in orphanage homes.
