A major political group in Enugu South Local Government Area has announced its decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing loss of confidence in the leadership style of Governor Peter Mbah and a desire to support what they described as “progressive governance at the national level.”
The group, under the aegis of Enugu South Progressives Forum (ESPF), made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting with APC state executives and stakeholders in Enugu.
Speaking at the event, the group’s coordinator, Hon. Chinedu Nwobodo, said the decision to leave the PDP was reached after wide consultations with members across the wards, adding that the Mbah administration had failed to deliver on its promises of inclusive governance and grassroots development.
We have been loyal members of the PDP for years, but today we can no longer pretend that all is well. Our people have been sidelined, our voices ignored, and our communities neglected. It is time to move on and join a party that truly values progress and accountability,” Nwobodo stated.
He noted that the group’s alignment with the APC was not just a political move but a commitment to support President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which, according to him, has begun to yield positive results across the country.
We have seen bold steps by the federal government to reform the economy and empower the people. We believe the APC offers a better platform for our people to thrive politically and economically,” he added.
Receiving the defectors, the Enugu State APC Chairman, Ugochukwu Agballa, commended the group for their courage, describing their decision as a “clear indication that the people of Enugu are ready for change.”
>What we are witnessing today is the beginning of a new political reality in Enugu State. The people are tired of deceit and underperformance. The APC is open to everyone who believes in the vision of a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria,” Agballa said.
He assured the new members of full integration into the party structure and urged them to mobilize support ahead of future elections to consolidate the APC’s growing influence in the state.
Political observers say the defection is part of a larger pattern of realignments in the Southeast as opposition to the PDP’s dominance grows amid calls for political inclusiveness and better governance.
The development is also seen as a setback for Governor Mbah, whose administration has recently faced criticism over alleged marginalization of party loyalists and failure to meet public expectations on key infrastructural projects.
