The on-going mass defection by some politicians from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and other political parties to the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC) without constitutionally approved reasons has clearly shown the buffoonery in them in spite of the fact that they had earlier sworn to uphold the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The brazen impunity with which they defect in droves to APC is a clear confirmation that those we had entrusted with the destiny of Nigeria and Nigerians are nothing but selfish elements whose only ambition is to feather their own nest at a time they ought to be concerned with the hardship, insecurity and wobbling state of the economy.
With no scruples, the likes of Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori one day woke up from sleep and decided to gamble with the destiny of a state populated largely by people who believe in the ideals of the PDP without deep consultation with the same people whose electoral powers brought him to power in the first place. He dragged everyone into APC as if the party has come with any messiac stance. He chose to run some rat race with his political godfather and predecessor; Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa into APC for reasons that hinge largely on selfishness than anything else. Time shall tell if they would win the race clean and clear in the days ahead.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State; Umo Eno and many others have since joined the mass defection train, giving spurious and infantile reasons for their action. Nigerians are not deceived because APC genuinely does not have what it takes to improve the lives of the masses rather than selfishly expanding their primitive accumulation. They evade prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which has largely and regrettably been made dysfunctional with respect to diligent prosecution of state crimes like looting of treasury by some public officials in the APC controlled federal government.
Matters are not helped by the increasing level of what one can call the act of playing God. It has become common place to read in the media the assertive declaration of those we can call politicians of iniquity boasting that Aso Rock has no vacancy in 2027 as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election is a done deal. Many of them have taken the place of God in deciding what happens next as far as politics is concerned. While a good number of them have turned themselves into ‘flight by night’ prophets all in attempt to tell Tinubu what he would like to hear, some others are coming up with warped political assessment that can convince only those with the idiocy of motor park analysts. Who will tell them that the 21st Century Nigeria is largely made up of brilliant minds whose only fault is that they are governed by misfits.
Many of these misfits are bereft of the understanding that economically speaking, there is a difference between economic growth and economic development. While some of them would want to credit APC with some relative quantum leap in Nigeria’s economic growth, not many would care to find out how such trillions generated by oil subsidy removal has touched the life of the average Nigerian.
Otherwise, how can any politician in his right senses be applauding the APC government as doing well when the lives of most Nigerians are getting worse by the day. Many people do not have means of livelihood while prizes of everything are soaring geometrically amidst high degree of insecurity across the length and breath of the country.
The worst is that in the face of this unbearable hardship, the Tinubu administration is on external borrowing spree, to sustain the ostentatious life style of every arm of government since the unwritten policy of the administration is to buy up every public institution and personality that can help sustain its hold on power till 2031.
With the shamelessness that now permeates our political space and the assertiveness of Tinubu’s cheerleaders who are bent on seeing him back to power in 2027 by hook or crook, not many Nigerians believe any longer in the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or the judiciary for a free and fair election in 2027, not even with what happened in 2023.
The suffering masses of Nigeria are clearly at cross road with their destiny pocketed by those who never believed that there is God or that in the affairs of man, God has the last say. Many unimaginable incidents that have occurred in this country ought to have served as lesson to those who are currently playing God but they seem to have learnt nothing and have forgotten nothing.
The only consolation for the common man in Nigeria now is that no one can bribe God to elongate his life beyond their natural date of death in spite of their belief that they would rule and enjoy the paraphernalia of office for ever. To everything under the sun, there is a time and there is season according to the holy scripture. So those who are defecting ignobly today to APC should know that a time shall come for them to account for their actions. History would certainly judge them harshly. This is not a curse.
