The death has been announced of a consummate visual artist, farmer, community leader, and repository of culture and tradition. De Gabriel Ikeiji Nwakanma
A statement by the family signed by Chido Nwakanma accepted the reality of the sad occurrence thus: ” ” the Nwakanma family bows in reverence to the divine will as they announce the peaceful transition to eternal glory of their revered elder and uncle, De Gabriel Ikeije Nwakanma, who built a legacy as a gifted fine artist, painter, and dedicated farmer”.
He devoted the 78 years of his earthly existence to creativity, labour, and community service.
Born in 1948, De Gabriel discovered a passion for the visual arts early in life, honing his talent to express the rich culture and beauty of his surroundings through paint and canvas. His creative work earned him lasting respect, but his impact extended far beyond the easel.
De Gabriel lived a life truly exemplifying the phrase, “A Lifetime of Service.” A multi-faceted man of deep talent and hard work, he made his mark on this world as a professional Fine Artist and Painter, leaving a legacy of beauty and creativity.
Rooted deeply in his hometown of Umuode Ikenna Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State, De Gabriel also committed himself to farming. His connection to the land and tireless labour provided a strong foundation of life for his family and community.
De Gabriel’s presence was a pillar of strength, and his wisdom as an elder guided many through the challenges of life. His life and departure on the 27th of August, bring to mind the poignant words of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” He ran his race with dignity and has now found his final rest.
His family is organising funeral arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life. The Wake Keep & Lying-in-State ceremony will be held on Thursday, 17th September, 2026.
The body will depart from AllBright Mortuary for his residence in Umuode Ikenna Nsulu.
The funeral cortege will make solemn stopovers at his maternal home in Okpuala fa Amangwu and at Umuegwurum Hall before proceeding to his residence for the night’s events.
The Farewell Service & Interment ceremony will take place on Friday, 18th September 2026, at his residence, Umuode Ikenna Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia State.
The family invites friends, colleagues, and well wishers to join us in honouring the life of an exceptional man. He left behind a complete and inspiring journey, a life where art, hard work, and faith seamlessly came together.
