The Dangote Group has confirmed its truck was involved in a tragic accident in Auchi, Edo State, on August 13, 2025, critically injuring Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Phyna, leading to the amputation of one leg, as reported by the company’s official X post. In response to public outcry sparked by Phyna’s social media demands for justice, Dangote Cement Plc issued a statement on August 14, pledging full medical care and compensation for Otabor. Senior officials and the company’s insurance team promptly visited the accident scene, engaged with law enforcement, and met Otabor’s family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, emphasizing their “unwavering commitment” to her well-being.
The incident, occurring just six days after Otabor’s graduation from Auchi Polytechnic, involved a truck allegedly driven by an unlicensed, underage driver who attempted to flee but was apprehended, according to Diaspora Digital Media. The Edo State Police Command arraigned the driver, who pleaded guilty to three of four charges, with the case adjourned to August 21. Dangote’s statement expressed hopes for Otabor’s “full and speedy recovery,” aligning with their welfare policy to support affected communities.
