The Cuban government has announced that 32 of its nationals were killed during a United States attack on Caracas that reportedly culminated in the capture of Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro.
Havana made the disclosure on Sunday, describing the incident as a “criminal attack” carried out by the US government against Venezuela. The statement was read on Cuban national television.
According to the Cuban authorities, the deceased were members of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior who were operating in Venezuela at the time of the attack.
The government said they were carrying out assigned missions “at the request of counterpart agencies.”
Cuba condemned the attack, saying the deaths occurred during combat operations linked to the assault on Caracas. It did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the killings or the specific roles of the Cuban personnel.
The development has heightened tensions in the region, with Havana accusing Washington of direct military aggression and warning of serious consequences for regional stability.
Neither the United States nor the Venezuelan authorities had issued an official response to the Cuban government’s claims as of the time of filing this report.
