Nigeria’s opposition leaders gathered at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja today, August 31, 2026, for the First Summit of Nigeria’s Opposition Political Parties organized by the G100 group.
​Four months after the signing of the Ibadan Declaration on April 25, 2026, where opposition leaders pledged to field a single consensus presidential candidate for 2027, the initial optimism has collided with individual political ambitions.
​Key figures attending the summit include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his running mate Rotimi Amaechi, along with Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso representing the newly formed National Democratic Coalition (NDC) platform, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
​Speaking on behalf of the organizing group, G100 spokesperson Salihu Moh. Lukman urged the leaders to put personal interests aside:
​”A divided opposition repeatedly hands an advantage to the incumbent. The summit’s goal is to establish a formal architecture through which questions of presidential candidacy can be negotiated collectively, transparently, and in good faith.”
​The gathering highlights clear operational divisions; Internal Rivalries, major contenders remain unwilling to step down, leaving unanswered the question of who will lead the ticket.
Opposition leaders continue to challenge provisions within the recently passed 2026 Electoral Act while raising concerns about party administration guidelines. Discussions persist regarding balancing Northern support with Southern rotational expectations.
​Whether today’s deliberations in Abuja yield a binding consensus mechanism or further highlight internal divisions remains to be seen as negotiations continue.
