The Cross River State House of Assembly has resolved to probe the call to delist Bakassi Local Government Area from the 1999 constitution.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem disclosed this during plenary at the assembly complex.
The Assembly’s resolution follows calls by the Indigenous Displaced People of Bakassi Communities, IDPBC to delist the area from the 1999 Constitution.
The petition which was dated 6th January, 2025 was signed by 13 critical stakeholders in the area including Iyadim Amboni, a former chairman of the council.
The petitioners also made a number of demands including the relocation of the headquarters of the area to Abana which is presently in the Republic of Cameroon.
However, during plenary, the Member representing Bakassi state constituency Hon. Eyo Bassey said he was not consulted before the petition was submitted.
Co-sponsors of the motion also denounced the petitioners for circumventing established channels.
Also rejecting the call, the Speaker of the Assembly said the call is against the interest of the people of the state.
“They have to come and tender a public explanation to the people of Cross River State why the petition came out without recourse to the Governor who is the chief security officer of the state.
“Nobody’s interest is greater than the interest of the people of Cross River State in its entirety.
“We will invite the culprit who has maliciously written this petition to the federal government because this is a complete misnomer,” the speaker said.
The Assembly resolved to invite the petitioners to offer public explanation to the state for the basis of their petition.
