Justice U.J. Mogboh of the Enugu State High Court sitting in Agbani has sentenced one George Amechi Igwesi to seven years in prison for defrauding a land buyer of ₦11.4 million. The judgment, delivered on June 19, 2025, followed Igwesi’s conviction on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing, filed by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the EFCC, Igwesi falsely claimed ownership of two plots of land located along Amurri Road in Agbani and tricked one Charles Emeka Okenwa into paying ₦11.4 million for the property in July 2022. He was arraigned in October 2023 alongside his company, Georgeann Enterprises Limited. While he pleaded not guilty, the EFCC presented three witnesses and several documents, which convinced the court that the case was proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Justice Mogboh sentenced Igwesi to seven years imprisonment without the option of a fine and ordered him to perform six months of community service within the court premises, in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. He was also directed to refund ₦7 million to the victim, having already returned part of the money during the investigation. His company, Georgeann Enterprises Limited, was discharged and acquitted.
