Proceedings in the ₦550 million defamation suit instituted by Senator Chris Anyanwu against former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim, were yesterday stalled at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Jabi, Abuja.
The case, which was scheduled to continue hearing, could not proceed following the absence of the presiding judge, Justice M. I. Sani, who was reported to be indisposed.
As a result, the court adjourned further hearing in the matter until March 17. Senator Anyanwu had approached the court seeking redress over comments allegedly made by Ohakim during an interview published in the January 12.
According to the claimant, the statements contained in the publication were defamatory and damaging to her reputation.
The suit, valued at ₦550 million, is aimed at securing compensation for what the Senator described as false and injurious remarks attributed to the former governor.
With the adjournment, parties are expected to reconvene next month when the court resumes consideration of the matter, pending the recovery and availability of the trial judge.
