A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following her arraignment on fresh charges filed by the Federal Government. The charges, which stem from alleged claims related to an assassination plot, were brought after weeks of legal wrangling between the senator and state authorities.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the bail application on Monday, setting conditions that include the submission of her passport and a ₦20 million bond, among other terms. The court also ruled that the senator must remain within jurisdiction pending the continuation of trial.
The fresh charges, though not fully disclosed to the public, reportedly involve statements made by the senator during the 2023 election cycle, which the prosecution claims were defamatory and posed a threat to public order. Akpoti-Uduaghan has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, describing the case as politically motivated.
Her legal team welcomed the bail decision, saying it was a positive step toward proving her innocence. The case has since been adjourned to a later date for further hearing.
