The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said that the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, cannot stop the party from going ahead with preparations for its forthcoming National Convention.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party described the ruling as a “blatant assault on Nigeria’s democratic process,” insisting that it retains the right to conduct its internal affairs without external interference.

Ologunagba said the court’s decision does not vitiate or restrain the PDP from proceeding with all activities and processes leading to the National Convention, where new National Officers will be elected to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

The party referenced a recent Supreme Court judgment which, according to it, reaffirmed the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

“The PDP urges all members, chapters, and organs nationwide to remain calm, steadfast, and focused on ensuring the successful conduct of the National Convention,” the statement read in part.

While expressing its commitment to the rule of law, the PDP disclosed that it had directed its legal team to immediately appeal the judgment, describing the move as part of its unwavering resolve to defend democratic principles and uphold multi-party democracy in Nigeria.
