The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that investigations uncovered a coup plot aimed at overthrowing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a reversal of its earlier position on reports surrounding an alleged attempt to destabilise the government.
The confirmation comes months after the Federal Government, in October 2025, cancelled the military parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1. At the time, speculation emerged linking the cancellation to an alleged coup attempt, claims which were initially denied by the military authorities.
The DHQ had previously insisted that the cancellation of the independence parade was unrelated to any coup plot and also dismissed reports of the arrest of some officers in connection with such allegations.
However, in a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that investigations conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) had established the involvement of some personnel in a plot to overthrow the government.
According to him, the investigations were carried out in line with established military procedures and the report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in accordance with extant regulations.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement said.
Uba explained that the comprehensive investigation carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel, adding that the findings identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting against the government.
“The findings have identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he said.
He disclosed that officers found to have cases to answer would be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial. This ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process,” the statement added.
Reports had earlier indicated that at least 16 military officers were arrested in the first week of October 2025 over the alleged coup plot, while two others were said to be on the run.
The defence spokesperson emphasised that the actions being taken against the affected officers are purely disciplinary, describing them as part of the military’s internal mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
Uba reassured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain loyal to constitutional authority and committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” he said.
He added that the military would continue to act within the law to safeguard national security and democratic governance.
