A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Member serving with the Information and Culture Ministry, Kebbi state, Miss Mernyi Joyce Iwuese, has distributed sanitary pads to over 200 female students in Kebbi state.
Iwuese also urged the Minister of Health, Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu Pate to step up campaigns in schools to tame the prevalence of menstrual infections among growing up girls.
She made the call in Birnin Kebbi at Command Girls Science College, Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, when she unveiled her Community Development Project (CDS) and distributed sanitary pads to 200 students.
Iwuese explained that the main reason she embarked on the project was to create awareness among the adolescent girls in schools on how to maintain personal menstrual hygiene to guard against infections associated with poor menstrual hygiene.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after distributing the free sanitary pads to young schoolgirls, Iwuese urged the Federal Ministry of Health under the leadership of Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu Pate to redouble efforts in curtailing the surge in menstrual infections in schools through aggressive campaigns.
“I got my motivation from the need for me to touch as many lives as possible. That is the reason I undertook the project with my little resources and some funds from the Commanding officer Dukku Barracks, Birnin Kebbi,” she explained.
During the programme, about two hundred girls benefited from free sanitary pads and a short drama was presented by students of the school.
In his address, the Commanding officer of One Battalion Nigeria Army Dukku Barracks, represented by Lieutenant . P. Ambe, thanked the Corps Member for her thoughtful gesture and choice of the school as the beneficiary of the project .
