The Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations that ₦100 million was paid into a personal bank account belonging to the son of the Inspector-General of Police.
The controversy erupted following claims that the Anambra State Government transferred the funds into the account for undisclosed purposes, sparking public outrage and calls for investigation.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, police authorities denied any wrongdoing, describing the reports as misleading and politically motivated. The statement clarified that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was not involved in any personal financial transaction with the state government, reports Vanguard.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the payment in question was linked to a contractual or administrative arrangement unrelated to the office of the IGP. The Force urged members of the public to disregard what it termed “unverified and sensational claims,” adding that efforts were underway to provide further clarification where necessary.
The development has drawn reactions from civil society groups and opposition figures, who insist that a transparent and independent investigation is required to clear the air and uphold public trust.
