Renowned Nigerian author and public intellectual, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has declared that former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is not driven by desperation for political power, but by a genuine passion to serve and reform Nigeria.

Adichie made the remarks while speaking at a leadership and democracy forum held in Lagos over the weekend. She praised Obi for his calm demeanor, consistency, and principled stance on governance, noting that Nigeria needs leaders who are more interested in nation-building than personal ambition.

“Peter Obi is not a desperate politician. He is someone who deeply believes in justice, accountability, and the possibility of a better Nigeria,” Adichie stated.

The award-winning novelist, who has in the past shown public support for Obi, said his approach to politics represents a new generation of leadership—one that prioritizes people over power.

“Even in the face of political games and systemic obstacles, he has remained focused and respectful. That, to me, is not the character of someone obsessed with grabbing power at all costs,” she added.

Her comments come amidst ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with speculation rife about Obi’s next move. However, Adichie urged Nigerians not to be swayed by political propaganda but to judge leaders by their values, integrity, and track record.

Many in the audience welcomed her remarks, applauding what they described as a “voice of truth” in Nigeria’s increasingly polarised political discourse.

Adichie’s statement has since gone viral on social media, stirring fresh discussions about character and credibility in Nigerian politics.
