Nigerian music stars have sparked a fresh debate on the country’s security challenges after singers Davido, Victony and Timaya publicly called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent action to address insecurity and protect vulnerable citizens, particularly children.
Davido stated that entertainers, including himself, need to speak up against the growing insecurity and perceived injustices across the country. Similarly, Victony took to X, formerly Twitter, to urge the President to “save our children and put an end to this mess,” drawing widespread reactions from Nigerians online.
Timaya also released a statement appealing to the Federal Government to demonstrate greater urgency, collaboration and commitment in tackling the nation’s security challenges. The singer stressed the need for decisive action to safeguard lives and restore public confidence.
While the artistes expressed deep concern over the situation, controversial street-pop singer Portable offered a different perspective, explaining why many Nigerian celebrities choose to remain silent on national issues. According to him, fear of arrest, persecution and harassment often discourages entertainers from speaking openly.
The contrasting views have ignited conversations across social media, with some Nigerians praising Davido, Victony and Timaya for using their influence to advocate for change, while others agreed with Portable’s concerns about the risks associated with public criticism.
The debate highlights the growing expectations placed on celebrities to address national issues amid the country’s ongoing security challenges.
