Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, has issued a heartfelt message to the faithful and all people of goodwill following the election of Pope Leo XIV. “We extend heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and assure him of our allegiance, prayers and support as he embarks on his Petrine ministry,” Archbishop Ugorji said, speaking on behalf of Nigeria’s bishops and the wider Catholic community.

He also saluted the College of Cardinals, singling out our venerable brother, Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpaleke, for his participation in the conclave. According to Archbishop Ugorji, the smooth transition “showcases the Church’s commitment to dignity, honor, and spiritual discernment,” providing a global example of “conducting affairs with grace and reverence as children of God.”

In closing, he invited “all Nigerians and people of goodwill to join us in praying for the new Pope, that he may be endowed with wisdom, courage, and grace to fulfill his sacred mission,” and reminded the clergy that the Votive Mass of Thanksgiving may now be offered in every church.

May God bless Pope Leo XIV and the entire Catholic Church.
