A cargo aircraft operated by Amazon Air crashed shortly after departure near Miami International Airport early Monday morning, resulting in at least five confirmed fatalities, according to local officials.
​The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 AM on Sunday, September 6,2026, as the freighter attempted an emergency turn back toward the airfield.
First responders were immediately dispatched to the perimeter site, where emergency crews worked to extinguish fires caused by the impact and secure the surrounding debris field.
​Speaking at a briefing held at 8:00 AM outside the airport’s incident command centre, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Spokesperson Elena Ramirez confirmed the initial casualty count.
“We can confirm five fatalities on board the flight,” Ramirez stated. “Our primary focus remains on site containment, hazardous materials mitigation, and supporting federal investigators.”
​Representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) arrived on scene shortly before 8:30 AM to initiate a joint investigation into the cause of the crash.
Lead NTSB Investigator Marcus Vance advised that search teams have retrieved the aircraft’s flight data recorders, though analysis will take several days.
