Residents of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, have commended Governor Bassey Otu for the introduction of a free Christmas bus service, describing it as a major relief that has helped to reduce the burden of high transportation costs during the festive season.
The free bus initiative, themed “Xmas Free Transport Service,” was recently launched by the state government as part of efforts to cushion the effects of prevailing economic hardship and ease movement for residents and visitors across the state during the Yuletide.
Many residents who spoke praised the governor for what they described as a timely and people-oriented intervention, noting that the cost of transportation usually spikes during the Christmas period.
According to them, the free bus service has enabled families to move around the city, attend social and religious gatherings, and engage in commercial activities without the usual financial strain.
Commuters expressed satisfaction with the orderly operation of the buses, adding that the initiative has also helped to reduce traffic congestion and promote safer transportation within Calabar and its environs.
Some residents noted that the service particularly benefited low-income earners, students and traders who rely heavily on public transportation.
Governor Otu’s administration explained that the initiative was designed to spread the joy of the season, foster inclusiveness and ensure that economic challenges do not prevent residents from celebrating Christmas.
The government also urged beneficiaries to use the service responsibly and cooperate with transport officials to ensure its smooth operation.
The “Xmas Free Transport Service” has since become a talking point across the state, with many residents calling on the government to consider sustaining similar interventions beyond the festive period to further ease the cost of living.
