Breaking News: Onyeka Owenu, Elegant Stallion, dies at 72

Nigeria has been hit hard once again, with the sudden death of Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Owenu, singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former X Factor series judge, in Lagos at the age of 72.

According to TheNiche, the online newspaper, which broke the news this Wednesday morning, the celebrated music maestro of the popular One Love Keep Us Together fame, slumped at a ceremony, shortly after a performance, and was confirmed dead after being rushed to the hospital.

“She was said to have died at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli,” the online news platform said of the multi-talented songstress who was also a former Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped.  She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” the news platform reported, quoting an eyewitness, who was at the ceremony and monitored the incident.

The passing of Onwenu, who hailed from Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government of Imo State, makes it the third prominent Igbo personality to die in the last week.

It started with Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, who died on Thursday, July 25, aged 82, and Ifeanyi Ubah, Senator representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, who died on Saturday, July 27, aged 52.
