Bokku Mart, a well-known retail chain in Lagos, has apologised to the public after a promotional video sparked outrage for containing an ethnic slur against the Igbo community.
The video, which featured social media influencer Defolah, was widely criticised for promoting ethnic bias and has since been deleted from all Bokku Mart platforms.
In the advertisement, Defolah showcased several household items sold at the store — including garri, beans, and other food staples — while praising their affordability and availability. However, controversy erupted over one of her remarks.
While displaying sachets of garri and beans, she said: “You mean I can get beans and garri Ijebu at Bokku without any Omo Igbo cheating me?”
The statement immediately drew heavy backlash on social media, with many Nigerians condemning it as a derogatory comment suggesting that Igbos are dishonest in business dealings.
Following the public outrage, the company issued a formal apology, describing the comment as “unintentional” and expressing deep regret for any offence caused.
In its statement, Bokku Mart reaffirmed that it is a “pro-Nigerian brand” that values unity and does not support or condone any form of ethnic discrimination.
