Mr Musa Sarkin-Adar, Chairman, Board of Directors, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has pledged to ensure upgrade of the authority for the nation’s economic growth.
A statement signed on Wednesday in Lokoja by the authority’s Assistant General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, said the chairman made the pledge on Wednesday when the board members visited the authority ‘s Headquarters.
Sarkin-Adar said, “I want to assure you that I will be fully committed and willing to deploy my time and resources towards the attainment of the authority’s vision to establish and sustain a first-class organisation managed professionally and responsibly.
“We want to see a NIWA that is flexible and adaptable to the needs of Nigerians, and recognised and respected locally and internationally.”
He said that as board chairman, he would respect the judgment and advice of fellow members and the management as well as join hands with well-meaning stakeholders to create and bequeath an organisation that was better than the one they met.
The chairman commended the past visionary board and management team, saying that they worked tirelessly with enthusiasm, inspiration and creativity, to achieve the Authority’s noble objectives.
The chairman thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for finding him and other members worthy to serve on the board.
In his welcome address, NIWA Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, expressed gladness to have such a distinguished group of individuals on board of the authority.
Oyebamiji said that he looked forward to working together with the board members to drive the authority’s growth and success.
“As we begin this new chapter, I want to tell you that we have made significant progress/achievements in recent times.
“These include increasing the number of goods and passengers on the inland waterways, enhancing safety by ensuring that the water transportation code is processed and gazetted.
“Others are deployment of more water marshals to man loading and off-loading points across the country, sensitising the general public on safety in more than twelve states, where about 6,000 standard lifejackets had been distributed,” he said.
