Fear and chaos gripped residents of Maiduguri on Monday evening after twin bomb explosions tore through crowded areas, leaving an unspecified number of people feared dead and many others injured.

The blasts, which occurred almost simultaneously at about 7:02 p.m., targeted the bustling Monday Market area around Elkanemi and a location near a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The timing of the attacks heightened concerns, as they came just hours after suspected insurgents launched coordinated assaults on multiple military positions across Borno State.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and terror as the explosions ripped through the evening crowd. Traders were reportedly closing their stalls for the day when the blasts struck, sending people running in different directions in a desperate bid to escape. The atmosphere quickly turned grim as injured victims lay scattered, awaiting urgent help.

Emergency responders raced against time to contain the situation. The Head of Operations of the Federal Fire Service in the state, Mohammed Kafaran, confirmed the incident, stating that personnel had been immediately deployed to the affected areas.

“Yes, there was a bomb explosion at the Monday Market area around Elkanemi. We have deployed our team there to assess the situation. We will get back to you shortly,” he said.

Security operatives and rescue teams were seen cordoning off the affected zones while ambulances transported the injured to nearby medical facilities. At the hospital vicinity, heightened tension forced temporary restrictions as authorities worked to secure the area against further threats.

The coordinated nature of the explosions has raised fears of a resurgence in insurgent activities linked to Boko Haram, which has long been responsible for attacks in the region. Residents expressed deep concern over the renewed violence, noting that such incidents threaten the fragile stability the state has struggled to rebuild in recent years.

As of the time of filing this report, officials were yet to confirm the exact number of casualties. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, while investigations into the attacks continue.

The tragic events have once again underscored the persistent security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, as communities in Maiduguri brace for the aftermath of yet another night of violence.
