The leadership of the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has disclosed that the adoption of non-violence and non-exodus principles by founder Chief Ralph Uwazuruike was strategically designed to safeguard the lives and properties of Ndigbo.
In an official statement released on Sunday, September 13, 2026, BIM-MASSOB National Director of Information Mazi Chris Mocha explained that both policies were specifically drafted to stop the historical cycle of Ndigbo losing lives, homes, and multi-generational business investments during crises in northern and western Nigeria.
According to Mocha, the policy was heavily tested ahead of the April 2003 general elections, a period when intense anxiety gripped numerous MASSOB members residing outside Igboland.
Amid transitional tensions, several members and diaspora affiliate groups, including the Biafra Foundation (BF) and Voice of Biafra International (VOBI) based in Washington, D.C. had strongly advised easterners living in the North and South-West to mass-relocate back to the East.
Rejecting panic-driven relocation, Uwazuruike maintained that no member or easterner should abandon their places of residence or commercial bases out of fear.
Formulated officially on September 13, 1999, the “Non-Exodus” principle was enacted to prevent the recurring historical trauma of Ndigbo fleeing mid-crisis, which historically resulted in catastrophic losses of multi-generational investments and human life.
”We feel that the number of lives lost in such crises are more than what could actually be lost if we had remained in our places of residence in the North or South-West,” Mocha stated during the briefing.
The group highlighted key factors and historical realities behind these guiding principles.
Historical stock-taking showed that Ndigbo historically suffered far greater casualties and property losses on highways, where host communities, armed groups, and opportunistic actors blocked transit routes during panics, than if they had stood their ground peacefully in their places of residence.
Heavily influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s civil resistance model, Uwazuruike chose a 25-stage peaceful strategy to pursue Biafran independence without dragging the region into an armed conflict with state security apparatuses.
BIM-MASSOB reiterated that Uwazuruike modeled the agitation on strict civil resistance to ensure the safety of Ndigbo worldwide while preserving institutional integrity over violent confrontations.
