His Royal Majesty Suanu Baridam, the king of the ancient Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, narrowly escaped death after being shot by gunmen on Sunday.
According to sources, the first-class monarch was attacked while returning from an engagement in Okwale community. The ambush occurred between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, both within Khana LGA.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen attempted to stop the king’s vehicle, but the driver refused to halt. In response, the assailants opened fire, striking the monarch in the leg. The driver was also reported to have sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The king and his driver were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities in the area have been alerted and are said to be investigating the incident to apprehend the perpetrators.
No official statement has yet been released by security agencies regarding arrests or the motive behind the attack, but residents have expressed shock over the brazen attempt on the life of the revered traditional ruler.
This incident adds to rising concerns over the safety of traditional institutions and public figures in Rivers State, as communities await swift action from law enforcement agencies.
