Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has distanced himself from reports linking him to an alleged 2027 presidential ticket involving former President Goodluck Jonathan and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The governor dismissed the speculation as unfounded and politically motivated, insisting that no such arrangement existed between him and the former president ahead of the next general election.
The controversy emerged after a faction of the PDP led by former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, reportedly adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate during a special national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
Although the former president did not personally attend the gathering, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker, Fred Agbedi, a development that immediately sparked fresh political conversations across the country.
Soon after the convention, social media platforms were flooded with reports claiming that Bala Mohammed was being considered as Jonathan’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
The speculation gained further momentum after a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Nuhu Sada, made a post on X suggesting that discussions were ongoing about pairing the Bauchi governor with Jonathan under the factional PDP arrangement.
The post quickly circulated among political supporters and commentators, generating widespread debate over the possibility of a Jonathan return to active partisan politics and the potential alliances that could shape the 2027 contest.
However, sources close to Governor Mohammed said the reports were entirely false and did not reflect his political position or ambition.
The governor was said to have expressed surprise over the rumours, maintaining that he remained focused on governance in Bauchi State and on broader efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions within the country.
According to aides familiar with the situation, Mohammed had neither been approached by the faction nor entered into any discussions concerning a joint ticket with the former president.
They also argued that the speculation was part of premature political manoeuvring already dominating conversations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The emergence of the Turaki-led PDP faction has added another layer of uncertainty to the opposition party, which has continued to battle internal divisions since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

Analysts, however, note that the endorsement by a faction of the PDP may not necessarily translate into a mainstream party position, especially given the unresolved leadership issues within the opposition party.
Meanwhile, Bala Mohammed remains one of the influential figures within the PDP and has frequently been mentioned in discussions surrounding the party’s future ahead of 2027.
As chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Bauchi governor has played a visible role in efforts to reposition the party after its electoral setbacks.
His political influence within the northern region and his national visibility have also continued to fuel speculation about possible higher political ambitions.
Nevertheless, associates of the governor insist that any conversation linking him to a Jonathan ticket remains speculative and lacks official backing.
They stressed that Mohammed would continue concentrating on governance, development projects and political reconciliation within the PDP rather than engaging in premature presidential calculations.
The latest development comes at a time when political activities across major parties are gradually intensifying despite the 2027 election still being years away.
Across the ruling All Progressives Congress, the PDP and other opposition platforms, consultations, alliances and strategic meetings have already begun to shape the emerging political landscape.
Observers say the coming months may witness more rumours, alignments and declarations as politicians test possible coalitions and gauge public reaction ahead of the next presidential race.
For now, however, Governor Bala Mohammed has made it clear that he is not part of any arrangement involving a joint presidential ticket with former President Goodluck Jonathan.
