Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has announced a donation of ₦1 million to each family of the deceased victims and ₦500,000 to each injured survivor of the recent tanker explosion in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area of the state.
The governor made the announcement on Thursday during a condolence visit to the affected community, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the scene and met with local leaders, survivors, and families of the victims.
Bago expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, which claimed several lives and left many others with severe injuries, describing it as a “devastating loss” for the state and the entire Essa community.
“Our hearts are with the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate accident. As a government, we stand with you in this moment of grief and will continue to support you in every possible way.”
He assured residents that the state government would work closely with emergency agencies to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and assist in rebuilding affected properties.
The governor also directed the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to provide immediate relief materials, including food and essential supplies, to victims and displaced families.
Bago further called on motorists, particularly drivers of fuel tankers and articulated vehicles, to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
“We must prioritize safety on our highways. The government will strengthen enforcement measures to ensure transporters comply with all safety standards.”
Community leaders and residents who spoke during the visit commended the governor’s swift response and compassionate gesture, saying it brought hope and relief amid the community’s grief.
The Essa tanker explosion, which occurred earlier in the week, reportedly resulted from a fuel-laden tanker losing control and bursting into flames, destroying several nearby houses and vehicles. Emergency responders have since cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents.
