The African Union (AU), through its long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063, has nominated Daniel Koussou as the African Union Special Envoy on Oil and Gas (Continental), a move aimed at strengthening Africa’s drive to harness its vast energy resources for sustainable development and economic transformation. Agenda 2063, the AU’s 50-year framework for structural transformation, sustainable development and economic integration, places energy at the heart of Africa’s industrialisation agenda.
The nomination of Koussou underscores the continent’s resolve to strategically position oil and gas as key enablers of growth, industrial expansion and energy security. In his new role, Koussou is expected to lead advocacy efforts across member states to ensure that Africa’s hydrocarbon resources are responsibly and efficiently deployed to drive continental prosperity. His mandate includes promoting policies that support value addition, boost industrial growth, enhance regional cooperation and strengthen Africa’s energy security in line with the goals of Agenda 2063.
The AU noted that while Africa continues to transition towards renewable energy, oil and gas remain critical to meeting current energy demands, financing development, and supporting industrialisation. As Special Envoy, Koussou will engage governments, industry stakeholders and development partners to align Africa’s oil and gas sector with long-term development priorities.
The appointment is seen as a strategic step towards ensuring that Africa maximises the benefits of its natural resources while advancing inclusive growth, economic resilience and sustainable development across the continent.
