Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned against verbal attacks targeted at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying such actions weaken opposition unity and harm Nigeria’s democratic interests.
Atiku issued the warning in a post shared on his X handle on Tuesday, amid increasing exchanges and disagreements among supporters of leading opposition figures.
According to him, personal attacks directed at either himself or Obi do not reflect genuine commitment to the opposition cause or the wellbeing of the country.
“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” Atiku stated.
He stressed that internal conflicts within the opposition only serve to strengthen the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he described as the major beneficiary of persistent infighting.
The former vice president urged supporters to focus on building consensus and cooperation, noting that unity remains essential for presenting a credible alternative capable of addressing Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.
Atiku’s intervention comes as opposition parties continue efforts to consolidate alliances ahead of future electoral contests, with calls growing for restraint, dialogue and collective purpose among their supporters.
