ABUJA – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over reports that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website was hacked, describing the claim as alarming and detrimental to Nigeria’s development.

Atiku emphasises importance of NBS data integrity for national development.

In a statement issued by his Media Office, Atiku noted that the hacking allegation adds to the series of troubling developments under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The claim that the NBS website was hacked is an unprecedented and disturbing development,” Atiku stated. “This incident coincides with the recent release of the bureau’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS), raising questions about the credibility of government data.”

He warned against tampering with or politicizing data from the NBS, emphasizing its critical role in planning, development, and research.

“These are strange times in Nigeria, and it is hoped that this is not an attempt to undermine the integrity of data used for vital national purposes. Manipulating statistics for political reasons is counterproductive,” he said.

Atiku also questioned the timing of the alleged hacking, noting, “The coincidence of this so-called hack occurring shortly after the release of damning security statistics is suspicious. This raises legitimate doubts about the authenticity of any data released under such circumstances.”

He concluded by urging vigilance over the integrity of NBS data, adding that its credibility is essential for the nation’s progress and stability.
