As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on citizens to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, stressing that the measures, though tough, are designed to secure a lasting transformation for the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Akume said the administration’s bold decisions on the economy, energy, security, and governance are already laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria. He noted that while the pains of subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and other policy shifts are evident, the long-term benefits will reposition the nation on a path of sustainable growth.
“Independence anniversaries are not just about celebration; they are moments of reflection and renewal of commitment to the nation’s ideals. At 65, Nigeria must choose the path of reforms that guarantee stability, productivity, and inclusiveness. President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda embodies this vision, and it requires the support of all Nigerians,” Akume stated.
The SGF highlighted progress in critical sectors, including agriculture, power, and infrastructure, adding that the federal government is expanding social safety nets to cushion the impact of reforms on vulnerable households.
He also praised Nigerians for their resilience and unity in the face of challenges, urging citizens to eschew divisive tendencies and embrace collective responsibility in nation-building.
“Our diversity is our strength, and our unity is our greatest weapon. Let us not allow temporary difficulties to overshadow the great future that lies ahead. With discipline, sacrifice, and patriotism, Nigeria will not only overcome its present hurdles but will emerge stronger,” Akume said.
The SGF reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance, stressing that Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary should inspire citizens to renew faith in their country.
He called on political leaders, civil society, labour unions, and the private sector to join hands with government in advancing reforms, saying “lasting transformation cannot be achieved in isolation, but through shared commitment and partnership.”
