The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its planned nationwide strike after federal authorities began disbursing June 2025 salaries ahead of the ASUU‑set deadline of midnight on July 7. Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, Chairman of the ASUU branch at the University of Abuja, confirmed that salaries were paid before the ultimatum expired, prompting the branch to retract its planned service withdrawal. This development delivers a temporary relief to students and academic staff who were poised for disruption due to the “No Pay, No Work” policy enforced by branches where payments remained unsettled.
ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna had issued a warning following delays in June salary payments, attributing the issue to the Accountant General’s Office despite a functioning payment system. He clarified that only branches still awaiting payment would remain inactive, while institutions like the University of Abuja and University of Jos that received their funds resumed lectures. The union maintained its stance that failure to meet the salary deadline could still trigger a new strike later in July should the Federal Government default again.
The academic community is watching closely to see if these underlying issues are resolved before another labour action looms later this month.
