The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has formally commenced a nationwide strike following the failure of the Federal Government to pay June 2025 salaries before July 3, invoking its “No Pay, No Work” policy. ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna confirmed that branches including the University of Jos and University of Abuja have already suspended lectures and statutory meetings in compliance with the union’s National Executive Council directive. Piwuna described the delays as “a deliberate act by the Office of the Accountant General” and said, “the platform is working well, but those who make it work are not willing to make it work”.
At the University of Jos, branch chairman Prof. Jurbe Molwus issued a memo stating that members would withdraw services indefinitely, effective July 4, until outstanding salaries were fully paid. Molwus noted that any delay beyond the third day of the month automatically triggers a strike, and the branch has activated a monitoring team to enforce the action.
Union leaders are urging the government to immediately release the remaining ₦10 billion Earned Academic Allowance and close ongoing salary arrears. They warn that further delays could lead to extended disruptions across Nigerian universities.
