Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, was granted bail following his arraignment in connection with an alleged assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
This case has drawn attention due to Ikwechegh’s prominent political position and the circumstances surrounding the allegations, raising public concerns over elected officials’ behavior and their treatment of citizens in public service sectors.
The alleged incident involves Ikwechegh’s reported physical altercation with Abuwatseya, leading to a formal complaint and investigation by the Nigerian Police.
The charges brought against Ikwechegh include assault, threats to life, and other related accusations.
The case is being prosecuted by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, indicating the seriousness with which the authorities are handling the matter.
Ikwechegh appeared before the Magistrates’ Court in Kuje, Abuja, on Wednesday, where he faced a three-count charge of assault and other alleged offenses.
During the proceedings, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty, and his legal counsel immediately requested bail. Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted this request, setting bail at ₦500,000 with specific conditions.
The bail terms stipulate that Ikwechegh must provide two sureties, each with a similar financial commitment of ₦500,000. The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide recent utility bills as proof of residence.
These stipulations reflect the court’s intent to ensure compliance with the legal process while allowing Ikwechegh temporary freedom until further court appearances.
The court adjourned the case until November 8, 2024, for further hearing.
