The Nigerian Army has arrested 18 individuals allegedly linked to the supply of logistics to Boko Haram terrorists in the North East, in what authorities described as a significant move to disrupt the support network sustaining insurgency in the region. The Army also issued a stern warning to communities, urging residents to desist from collaborating with insurgents in any form, stressing that such actions pose a serious threat to national security and public safety.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Wednesday, the Nigerian Army disclosed that the suspects were intercepted while moving through Gubio towards the Gudumbali axis, an area known for insurgent activities.
According to the statement, the individuals were allegedly transporting supplies meant for terrorist elements operating within the region.
The Army explained that the arrest followed a coordinated operation by troops who had been monitoring movement along the route based on intelligence reports. The suspects were reportedly apprehended before they could reach their destination, thereby preventing the delivery of materials believed to be critical to the operations of the insurgents.
Preliminary investigations, according to the military, revealed that many of the suspects were drawn into the illegal trade due to personal economic challenges. The Army noted that insurgent groups often exploit vulnerable individuals, especially those facing financial hardship, by offering money or other incentives in exchange for logistical support such as food supplies, fuel, and information on troop movements.
Security experts have long warned that the logistics network of insurgent groups remains one of the major factors prolonging the conflict in the North East.
