The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has clarified the rationale behind appointing an Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) following President Bola Tinubu’s decision.
Speaking in Abuja at a formal ceremony, General Musa described the appointment as a significant and unprecedented move in the Nigerian Armed Forces’ history.
The newly appointed Acting COAS, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, officially assumed office following his appointment on Wednesday.
The decision was made to temporarily fill the role of Lt-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, who is on medical leave. The announcement came after the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had initially described the position of an acting army chief as outside the framework of the Harmonised Armed Forces Act.
In his address, General Musa emphasized the critical need for continuity within the military, especially given Nigeria’s current security challenges.
“The nation faces numerous challenges, and the wisdom of the President and Commander-in-Chief has led to this appointment to ensure no gap in command,” he stated. The Acting COAS, he continued, will exercise full control and authority over the Army until further notice.
General Musa urged officers to rally behind Major General Oluyede, ensuring that the Nigerian Army continues to function seamlessly.
“Lt-Gen Lagbaja would not want any gaps to emerge in his absence,” he said, adding, “Nigeria must survive, the armed forces must survive, and the services must endure. I call on all officers to work together in addressing the insecurity challenges facing the nation.”
The new Acting COAS was presented with his mandate under Section 18-1-4 of the Armed Forces Act, which outlines the powers and command structure of the Nigerian military.
General Musa reiterated that Major General Oluyede’s authority now extends to directing the operations and administration of the Nigerian Army in line with these provisions.
In his acceptance speech, Major General Oluyede expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, noting the unique circumstances surrounding his appointment.
“This is not a typical situation, but given the urgency, it is necessary,” he said.
Oluyede pledged his loyalty to the President and assured that he would maintain the operational integrity of the Nigerian Army while the substantive COAS focuses on recovery.
The Acting COAS committed to continuing the legacy of Lt-Gen Lagbaja, emphasizing the importance of resilience, professionalism, and discipline within the military ranks.
