The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has reaffirmed its dominance in Anambra State politics with resounding victories in the just-concluded Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North I House of Assembly by-elections held on Saturday.
The outcomes clearly demonstrated APGA’s entrenched political influence in the state, delivering a humiliating defeat to rival parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP), and People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who had confidently predicted a landslide victory for APGA, saw his assertion validated as the party swept both elections with overwhelming margins.
In the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, APGA candidate Emma Nwachukwu secured a commanding victory with 90,408 votes, far ahead of the APC candidate who polled 19,847 votes. ADC followed with 2,889 votes, while LP and PDP trailed behind with 205 and 68 votes, respectively.
Similarly, in the Onitsha North I State Constituency by-election, Barrister Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe of APGA garnered 7,774 votes, decisively defeating ADC’s Mrs. Justice Azuka, who received 1,909 votes. APC’s Mr. Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe and YPP’s Ms. Njideka Ndiwe managed 1,371 and 655 votes, respectively.
Political analysts have described the by-elections as a critical litmus test for the upcoming 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election, scheduled for November 8. With these victories, APGA has not only consolidated its grassroots support but also strengthened the reelection prospects of Governor Soludo.
The results affirm APGA’s continued control over Anambra’s political machinery and reinforce the party’s popular slogan: “Anambra is APGA, and APGA is Anambra.”
