The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed recent remarks by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, in which he said his party would closely monitor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with PUNCH on Sunday, the APC Public Relations Officer in Kano State, Ahmad Aruwa, described Kwankwaso’s comments as “confusing and unnecessary,” arguing that the NNPP national leader no longer has a firm grasp of current political realities in the country.
Aruwa said Kwankwaso’s statement suggested a misunderstanding of the electoral process and the role of political parties in safeguarding democracy, noting that all parties are expected to observe and participate in electoral activities within the framework of the law.
“He is confused and has reached some level of age, beginning to lose track of Nigerian politics. I believe he already lost the election,” Aruwa said. The APC spokesperson maintained that INEC remains a constitutionally established and independent body whose operations are guided by law, stressing that no single party can claim exclusive responsibility for monitoring the electoral umpire.
He added that the ruling party in Kano was focused on strengthening its structures and delivering good governance rather than engaging in what he described as “political distractions” ahead of the 2027 polls.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, had earlier stated that the NNPP would keep a close watch on INEC to ensure transparency and credibility in future elections, a remark that has since generated mixed reactions across the political space. The exchange reflects the growing political tension in Kano State as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the next general elections.
