Former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following a tragic car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two members of his close-knit team.

Joshua, 36, was released after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. The boxer, however, was described as deeply shaken and grieving the loss of his friends.

In a joint statement issued by the Lagos and Ogun state governments, it was confirmed that Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV involved in the crash on Monday. The vehicle reportedly suffered a burst tyre before slamming into a stationary truck along the highway.

Two of Joshua’s close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both aged 36, lost their lives in the accident. Ghami served as Joshua’s long-time sport and exercise rehabilitation coach, working with him for over a decade, while Ayodele was his personal trainer and fitness coach.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Sina Ghami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua,” the statement said. “We pray that the Almighty grants the repose of their souls and gives their families the strength to bear this painful loss.”

The statement added that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos shortly after his discharge to pay their respects, as preparations were underway to repatriate the bodies of the deceased.

Authorities also commended the medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their swift response and professionalism in treating Joshua and others injured in the crash.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the public for their support during the difficult period.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, took to social media to mourn the loss.

“Rest in peace Latz and Sina,” Hearn wrote. “Your energy, loyalty and many great qualities will never be forgotten. My prayers are with your families, friends and AJ during this incredibly difficult time.”

Joshua is expected to remain out of public view as he recovers physically and emotionally from the devastating incident.
