Engr. Dr. Abubakar Haruna Egbonu, Head of the Environmental Department at Seaview Properties Limited (SPL), a subsidiary of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has emerged as the Overall Best PhD Graduate at the University of Lagos 56th Convocation Ceremonies held on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
The distinguished engineer received accolades from various quarters, including a congratulatory message from Mr. Okhosimhe John, Managing Director/CEO of Easy Deal Global Limited and a prominent member of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA).
In his congratulatory message, the ANLCA top gun, Okhosimhe John highlights the intersection between academic excellence and practical industry application, particularly within the maritime and port operations sector where Dr. Egbonu serves as Head of Environmental Department at Seaview Properties Limited.
“His dual role as an academic researcher and industry practitioner positions him uniquely to bridge the gap between theoretical innovation and practical environmental solutions in Nigeria’s critical port infrastructure” Okhosimhe stated.
Dr. Egbonu’s groundbreaking research in Civil and Environmental Engineering focused on improving engineering structures using nanotechnology.
His thesis introduced a novel method for generating electricity from the dynamic behavior of carbon nanotubes, making power readily available for handheld and domestic gadgets.
Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Dr. Egbonu explained that his research directly addresses Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 9, and 11, with particular emphasis on improving quality of life by making power more accessible. The study has produced seven scholarly peer-reviewed articles published in international journals of repute.
“This achievement did not come without inherent challenges of low and high emotions, filled with moments of uncertainties, dwindling resources, and repeated deadlines, Yet, each challenge became an opportunity for growth and development both as an academic and researcher.” Dr. Egbonu acknowledged during his acceptance speech.
Admitted into the demanding Civil and Environmental Engineering doctoral program in 2020, Dr. Egbonu credited his success to the exceptional guidance of his supervisors, Professor O.M. Sadiq and Dr. M.G. Sobamowo, whose academic rigor and high standards shaped his research work.
In his address to the dignitaries, Dr Egbonu expressed special gratitude to Dr. Ahmed Amoo Yinusa, whom he referred to as his “third supervisor” and the Best PhD Thesis Award Winner at UNILAG’s 53rd Convocation.
“My present height is a sequel to standing on the shoulders of the great,” he remarked, acknowledging the mentorship that contributed to his academic excellence.
“This award is dedicated to all students who seek to make a positive impact through knowledge and innovation,” he declared, urging fellow researchers to remain committed to academic excellence despite challenges.
The Best PhD Graduate also commended the School of Postgraduate Studies for maintaining high academic standards and ensuring quality assurance throughout the doctoral program.
