The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned a member representing one of the constituencies under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to appear before its leadership over alleged offensive social media posts.
According to sources within the Assembly, the posts, which circulated widely in recent days, were considered derogatory to the legislature and capable of undermining its integrity. Some lawmakers reportedly accused the PDP member of using his verified social media accounts to “misrepresent proceedings” and “cast the House in bad light before the public.”
The Speaker, while reading the resolution on the floor of the House on Tuesday, directed the lawmaker to appear before the House Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to explain his actions.
“The House cannot fold its arms while one of its members uses social media recklessly to malign colleagues and misinform the public about parliamentary business,” the Speaker stated.
Reactions have, however, trailed the move, with supporters of the PDP lawmaker insisting that the Assembly is attempting to stifle free expression. Some argued that the posts in question only highlighted issues of governance and accountability, which fall within the rights of any elected representative.
The lawmaker has yet to issue an official statement, but aides said he would honour the summons and defend his position.
Observers note that the development underscores rising tension in the Anambra political space, as opposition lawmakers often rely on social media to amplify their voices in a House dominated by the ruling party.
