Anambra House of Assembly has joined other Nigerians to facilitate and commend the Armed Forces in the country on their security efforts as they mark their Celebration and Remembrance Day.
Dr Somtochukwu Udeze, Speaker of the House, gave the commendation in his tribute to members of the Nigerian Legion and ex-service men on Thursday in Awka.
He said that their efforts are worthy of commendation and remembrance.
The message is contained in a statement made available to newsmen by Mr Emma Madu, Udeze’s Press Secretary.
The speaker noted that the officers, who served the country with their might and paid the supreme price, needed to be rewarded.
He called on governments at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to renew their commitments in honouring the fallen heroes and those still in the service.
Udeze also urged members of the public to honour and value the veterans with their resources and good welfare packages.
He said that the veterans are the reason Nigerians enjoy a strong and united country.
The speaker lauded the efforts of the Nigerian fallen heroes whom he said left the comfort of their homes in defence of the country.
He reminded the citizenry that the freedom and peace they enjoy today were paid for with the blood and toll of the ex-service men.
He urged them to emulate the sacrifice, brevity and patriotism demonstrated by the officers in all ramifications for greater growth and development of the country.Udeze commended the Gov. Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra for his continuous support to members of the Legion in the state.
He enjoined philanthropists in the country to commit part of their resources to ensuring a better life for the legionaries as well as their family members.
He said such gestures would serve as a memorial for the contributions and selfless service they rendered for the existence of the country as a sovereign nation.
The speaker noted that the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day gave Nigerians the opportunity to appreciate men and women who constitute the Armed Forces Community, ranging from those currently serving, the retired veterans and those undergoing various training.
He urged the masses to see the peace, unity and development of the country as a collective responsibility devoid of tribe, religion or political affinity.
Udeze prayed for the repose of the souls of the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in defence of the country.
He encouraged those still in active service not to relent but continue to serve their father’s land with faith and love.
