Former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has dismissed widespread speculation that he is planning to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking through his media aide on Sunday, Ambode described the rumours as “false, malicious, and politically motivated,” insisting that he remains a committed member of the APC and a loyal supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“There is no truth whatsoever in the claims making the rounds that His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is in talks with any opposition party or contemplating leaving the APC,” the statement read. “Governor Ambode remains steadfast in his belief in the party’s ideals and continues to support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The clarification follows days of speculation on social media and political blogs, alleging that the former governor had been holding discreet meetings with key figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).

Political observers say the rumour was fuelled by Ambode’s recent appearances at public events outside the state, coupled with his silence on some local APC activities. However, his camp insists these have been routine engagements with no political undertones.

“Ambode’s focus remains on contributing positively to governance, economic growth, and youth empowerment within the framework of the APC,” the aide added.

The former governor, who led Lagos State from 2015 to 2019, has largely maintained a low profile in politics since leaving office. His reaffirmation of loyalty to the ruling party is seen as an attempt to douse tension and speculation ahead of the 2027 electoral season, which is already witnessing early alignments and rivalries.

Party leaders in Lagos welcomed Ambode’s statement, with one senior APC official noting that “unity within the party is critical as we prepare for the challenges and opportunities of 2027.”
