The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, endorsing him ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during the association’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, where key stakeholders from across the country gathered to deliberate on issues affecting governance at the grassroots level. The meeting, chaired by ALGON National President, Bello Lawal, drew participation from representatives of all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside former leaders of the association.
The motion to endorse Tinubu’s re-election bid was moved by former ALGON President, Alabi Kolade David, and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON Chairman, Anani Hamisu Mohammed, reflecting what participants described as a broad consensus within the body.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, Mohammed stated that continuity under Tinubu’s leadership would “deepen grassroots governance” and consolidate ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening local government administration. He noted that the association’s endorsement was rooted in its assessment of the administration’s policies, particularly the much-publicised Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to ALGON, the Tinubu administration has made notable strides in enhancing fiscal capacity and promoting autonomy at the local government level, long-standing demands of council authorities across Nigeria. The association argued that recent policy directions have enabled councils to better access and manage resources, thereby improving service delivery to communities.
For years, local government administration in Nigeria has grappled with challenges ranging from inadequate funding to limited autonomy, often leaving councils dependent on state governments for financial allocations. ALGON’s endorsement suggests a growing confidence among local government leaders that current reforms could help reverse these trends if sustained.
Speakers at the meeting reportedly highlighted improvements in revenue flows and institutional support, pointing to what they described as a renewed focus on empowering grassroots governance structures. They maintained that continuity would allow these initiatives to mature and produce more tangible outcomes in areas such as rural development, primary healthcare, and local infrastructure.
Political observers view the endorsement as an early signal of alignment between local government leadership and the federal administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
